Seven matches into the season, almost ¼ of the 2016-2017 campaign done, and Chelsea hitman Diego Costa stands alone at the top of the scorer’s table. Costa has struck the back of the net six times for the Blues, more than any other player in the premiership. Costa has found his opportunities primarily in late-game scenarios, rescuing Chelsea at the death of two games to begin the season. The Spaniard has not always found life easy up top, as he has accrued four yellow cards in this young season, more than any other forward.
Surprisingly, right behind Diego Costa in the standings is West Ham’s Michail Antonio. Antonio has translated his promising form from the end of last season into some top-notch football, bagging five goals for the Hammers. The English midfielder is joined at a tie for second place by Manchester City’s Sergio Agüero and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku. The Argentine missed three games for violent misconduct yet has still managed to find himself on the score sheet as many times or more than anyone not named Diego Costa. Agüero looks like a strong candidate to claim the golden boot, which would be his second of his Premier League career. Romelu Lukaku also has 5 goals on the season. The former Chelsea man is proving to be the player he was once advertised as, a natural goal scorer. Five goals is not too shabby for a team that has only found the back of them net 11 times this campaign.
Eight players are locked in at four goals on the season. Most notably is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the massive Manchester United signing. Zlatan is not off to the dominating start he has become accustomed to after his years at French giants Paris St. Germain. Additionally ex-Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has four goals to his name. His and Sergio Agüero’s goal totals are a major reason why Manchester City see themselves at the top of the Premier League table. Surprisingly, our defending golden boot winner, Harry Kane, sits at only two goals this season. Although his club Tottenham is off to a flying start, Kane has not been the main hitman as Heung-Min Son can claim four goals for the Spurs.
Looking forward, Diego Costa has a matchup against a fairly vulnerable Leicester City team and he will be looking to add to his tally of six. Two top goal scorers Romelu Lukaku and Sergio Agüero will meet this week, both aiming to lead their sides to a crucial top of the table win. Michael Antonio and West Ham will travel across London to meet Crystal Palace, where Antonio should have a favorable matchup against a Palace defence that has allowed eight goals this season. Expect to see Costa and Agüero add a goal or more to their season totals, with Lukaku having a harder time finding the net. Antonio has a weaker opponent in Crystal Palace, however his role as a midfielder may hinder his goal scoring opportunities.
